Sky's 3D TV service is due to hit our screens on October
1st, boasting three live 3D sports fixtures every week
(beginning with the Ryder Cup) and a raft of 3D films, including
'Ice Age', 'Alice In Wonderland' and 'My Bloody Valentine'.
Not to be outdone, Virgin have chosen today to announce their
new 3D On Demand service. Virgin Media customers with a 3D-ready
TV, glasses and set top box will now be able to access 3D films on
demand. (Well, they can currently access one film, 'Street Dance
3D', but Virgin have promised more films and programmes will be
entering the third dimension before the new year).
Virgin's 3D endeavour has been undertaken in partnership with
Samsung (who're using the service to promote their 3D TVs) and is
powered by FilmFlex, Virgin's download service. As Virgin's
Director of Digital Media, Cindy Rose, explains: "As we've already
seen with the take up of high definition programmes, viewers are
continually looking for new ways to experience their favourite
shows, and with the addition of 3D On Demand, they will be able to
watch eye-popping movies whenever they want." The plan is to roll
out more services as more viewers spring for 3D screens.
Just like Virgin, Sky are offering a string of family-friendly
3D films in the run-up to Christmas. They also plan to broadcast 3D
documentaries and entertainment shows, including 'Flying Monsters',
'7 Wonders of the Solar System' and, to the Jigsaw office's eternal
delight, '3D Meerkats'.
Now all that's left for you to do is sit back, slip on your
Buddy Holly specs and watch these two pay-per-view heavyweights
duke it out in glorious S3D.
