Attention all gamers and 3D fanatics: Sony have
announced 3D Display, a 24" 3D monitor and active glasses combo,
which will be launching later this year. The big news here is that
Sony have patented technology that will let two players see
different 3D content on the same screen, so it's goodbye split
screen view and hello full screen S3D multiplayer
gaming.
The display
The 24", Full HD LED screen uses quad-speed frame
sequential display, which Sony's press team tell us is a first for
a screen of this size. It should help to minimise crosstalk, so you
get a sharper, more realistic 3D image. Frame packing, top and
bottom and side-by-side display modes are all supported.
The specs for the screen are promising: 5000:1 contrast, a
176 degree viewing angle and an average response time of 4ms GTG
all suggest that the screen should be able to deliver pretty
impressive S3D (although we've not yet seen how it handles
high-speed gameplay). Sony have also promised a one second boot
time and a power saving mode that cuts in if there's no video
signal for more than five seconds.
Two HDMI ports and the ability to connect older devices
via a component input connector mean there's opportunity to hook
the screen up to other gaming gadgets, while the space-conscious
among you will be happy to hear that it's only 35mm thick at its
widest point, and "features a curved line form factor that is both
stylish and unobtrusive in living spaces, complementing the sleek
design of the PS3 system."
The glasses
Sony's 3D glasses will be compatible with screens released
by other manufacturers, which is always a plus for active glasses.
There was a rumour that they'd also come with earbuds, giving
gamers an individual audio track to go along with their full screen
3D image, but we haven't heard any official confirmation of
that.
What we do know is that they charge quickly - Sony reckon
a three minute charge will give you enough power for three hours of
use, while 45 minutes translates to roughly thirty
hours.
The price
The whole bundle - glasses, monitor, HDMI cable and a copy
of Insomniac's 'Resistance 3' to try it all out on - will be
available in autumn, and currently has an RRP of $499.99. The
glasses will also be available separately for your local equivalent
of $69.99.
